The Person
I have been a mother for 21 years, a single mom for 16 of those years and a professional in my chosen career for 14 years. The combination of my education, work experience and life experience has developed my inner wisdom and expertise in understanding, motivating and challenging people and organizations to reach their full potential.
Growing up, I persisted under difficult family dynamics to earn a full scholarship to an Ivy League university and become the only member of my family to go to college. Soon after graduation, I married my college sweetheart. Together we embarked on the path of the “dream life”: I went to graduate school, began a career in speech pathology, and gave birth to three beautiful boys.
That perfect dream was shattered on February 24, 1992. On that day, my husband of over ten years died suddenly in his sleep at the age of 34. At that defining moment of my life I was thrust headlong into an alternate reality, suddenly becoming a young widow living over a thousand miles from family support with three children under the age of six.
Rather than accepting defeat and letting my grief define me, I consciously chose to see my situation as a new beginning. I created a new definition of “family” that helped me and the boys feel complete as a solid family unit.
I took the opportunity to rise to the challenge and redefine myself: I don’t just survive, I thrive. Conquering my grief was a process that took many years, and along the way I overcame emotional and financial obstacles while striving to maintain my sense of humor and joy for life. This was a promise I made to myself, my children and the memory of my beloved husband.
Over the next decade, I embarked on a new career that led to executive level positions in dynamic companies while raising my sons to be independent young men who enjoy life and feel fully parented. My personal journey has led me to develop fulfilling friendships, and I have reestablished strong ties with my siblings and extended family.
